Residents of Middleton-on-the-Wolds may not be aware that the above scheme operates in the village.

When a 999 call is made to the Ambulance Service an ambulance is despatched and at the same time the village First Responder Scheme is alerted. If the service thinks that there may be a possibility fo a cardiac problem it could be that a First Responder will arrive before the ambulance. This is not a need for concern. The fact that aFirst Responder has arrived means that an ambulance is on its way. It is stressed that the scheme is in no way a substitute for the Ambulance Service.

The primary aim is to give aid, if required, in the first few minutes following a cardiac arrest where it is vital that normal cardiac activity is restored as quickly as possible to avoid permanent damage to the patient. However, the arrival of a First Responder does not indicate that the patient is definitely suffering a heart attack. It is only a precaution.

In most cases the First Responders have only to give reassurance and comfort to the patient. You will appreciate that living in a rural area means that it may take a little longer for an ambulance to reach a patient than it would in an urban area.

The Responders are fully trained in the technique of Cardiac Defibrillation, Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation and the Administration of Oxygen. For your peace of mind and easy recognition they wear a First Responder tabard when attending calls.
